Tell us about your brand! When did you launch, where are you headquartered, what moved you to start your business?
JB Training Services Inc was started in 2022 as a result of Covid-19. Our sister company, Bernal Business Services Inc, was hit hard by Covid as businesses struggled with shut-downs as a result of the pandemic. For several of our larger clients we focused on reducing their bookkeeping costs by training their staff. This worked out so well for several businesses, I joke that I trained myself out of clients.
Prior to Covid, Canada-Alberta Job Grant (CAJG) provided funding to businesses for “employees” to take courses that would help grow their skills and increase their employability. In March 2021, CAJG opened this up to business owners themselves, and employed family members who may also qualify for the CAJG to help pay for courses that would help their business. There were a few restrictions including the fact that a business could only have a maximum of 3 employees plus the business owner, and family members needed to have been an “employee” of the business for a minimum of 90 days prior to the CAJG application.
But this opened up a whole new world of possibility for the owners of small businesses. One of their major challenges is often centered around finances. Not only do they have to focus on sales and production (which can take up a large amount of time), with marketing a very close second, but they also have to manage all the administrative work… with finances and bookkeeping often being left to the end to get done in a rush. On top of that, most business owners know very little about government rules and regulations, and are fortunate if they can manage the basics of the software program they’re using. They may wind up paying more in late fees and penalties, as well as lose out on tax saving opportunities.
Not only that, but business owners often lack the information needed to help make good business decisions. Simple things like Return on Advertising Dollars (including social media, networking, etc), and Return on Time, are not monitored so the business owners may not know where the most profitable investment of their time and money are.
Thus, in June 2021, JB Training Services Inc was opened as a way for business owners and their employees to qualify for the Canada-Alberta Job Grant (CAJG) which covered up to 2/3rds of the cost of our bookkeeping courses. However, in April 2022, the government changed a few things and now our new company (JB Training Services Inc) no longer qualified as a “training provider” for the CAJG – but the old company did (Bernal Business Services Inc)! So now, both companies offer the same training, however, if business owners want to apply for the CAJG to cover up to 2/3rds of the cost of our bookkeeping courses, the training and CAJG application has to go thorough Bernal Business Services Inc.
Both JB Training Services Inc and Bernal Business Services Inc are headquartered out of Edmonton, Alberta and serves clients all across the province.

What other methods/strategies did you try in order to address those issues prior to using Smarcomms?
Realizing I was in over my head in managing the social media aspect of things, I hired the people who did my new website to create and run Google Ads for me. Their website fees also included some Facebook posts, curated articles, and blogs. But I really needed someone that could take a more proactive approach to reaching my target audience. To helping me to connect and learn how to communicate over this dynamic media.
How did you learn about Smarcomms?
Then I saw Smarcomms on Facebook. And… I ignored it. And it popped up again, and again, and again. Until one day I clicked it and took a look at their website. “Interesting”, I thought, “but not for me.” But every now and then, the Smarcomms ad would pop up on my Facebook feed, and every now and then I would head to their website and take a look. And eventually I decided to give them a try.
